The Federated S.A.F.E. app is designed to enhance the culture of safety at rural electric systems by providing an interactive tool to assist with job planning, hazard recognition, and employee and member safety. A key feature of the app is the job planning tool, which is designed to assist with pre-job planning by providing a guide for construction, maintenance and outage restoration related tasks. The material provided within the job briefing app was developed through knowledge sharing and the long standing partnership of Federated, NRECA and RESAP Area Administrators. The team mission is to provide an instrument to eliminate electrical contacts by addressing the common causes of employee contacts.

For many years, the industry standard has been to develop a job briefing outline that encompasses all tasks that are reviewed at a session before work begins. The problem with this approach is that it can be a challenge for linemen to remember in the field. Here is a new approach that allows the user to pick the task and then be led through the crucial steps of preforming the task safely while on the job. Over the last 10 years, outage restoration tasks account for 35%-40% of employee contacts and the development team believes that this high percentage is due, in large part, to a lack of formal job planning. Therefore, a path was developed to address this in the app that engages the user and leads them through the proper steps required to restore outages.

The S.A.F.E. app also allows supervisors real time review of job briefings completed in the field. Once the briefing is completed, the report is immediately sent to supervisors designated by the cooperative. The reports can also be stored and reviewed on Federated’s website. This can encourage review and coaching by cooperative management.
